Helen Munday, Trust Matron, Papworth Hospital, Cambridge shares with us why she is excited about the cycle ride and why it is important to be aware of the symptoms of heart valve disease.

I’m really excited to be participating in the Heart Valve Voice cycle ride to the EuroPCR conference in Paris! Not only is it an exciting adventure but it is an excellent chance to spread the word about the importance of heart valve disease and of the symptoms that our older population should be aware of.

The difficulty with heart valve disease is that it isn’t a disease that many people know about and that is a problem. With the work of Heart Valve Voice and the help of cardiac clinicians around the country, the hope is that the number of people who know about the disease will grow so that soon it will be something that the majority of the population is aware of. The other difficulty is that the symptoms of heart valve disease are often confused with the ageing process and are sometimes dismissed as signs of old age.

This is why the work that Heart Valve Voice is doing is so important and why I am happy to be helping to let people know that the symptoms of heart valve disease should not be ignored. It is so important that people know that often feeling breathless, rundown and ’old’ can all be symptoms of heart valve disease and that they need to get checked by a clinician.

I love helping my valve disease patients find their new lease of life and in the future I hope that I will be able to help more people to live happier, healthier and longer lives!
